Sorry for an extremely belated happy 76th birthday (27 June) to La Splendissima, Anna Moffo.
The Brindisi (Libiamo, libiamo ne'lieti calici), from Traviata, sung by Richard Tucker and Anna Moffo in a studio recording (Stereo)...while Tucker is not particularly known for his interpretation in the role of Alfredo, he was capable (despite his colossal voice) of very lyrical, warm and beautiful singing needed for the role; needless to say, he does far more than a fantastic job here.
What to say about Moffo? Simply put, the best Violetta there ever was.

  • Wonderful and her best recording ever! She did it in studio video later with Franco B. but this is her best one, now on CD and available, olso with Merrill who was in prime voice and as for Tucker listen to the last note of the duet for power, he did it at the met early and again in 1967 with Caballe. He was 46 years old here and still lyric and strong when called for, also at a gala he sang act one in 1970 with Sutherland just as well.

  • by this time Tucker had enormous power on the top of his voice as you hear on that last note, this was 1960, prime for both of them and a wonderful recording with Merrill to sing the father and beautifully, Moffo was never better.

  • Love it. Great performance.

  • Anna Moffo had italian roots. ;D Ah, l'orgoglio italiano!

  • What a superb quality of sound

  • Tucker was so great i just love him !

  • Don't know much about opera and have only heard a few versions of this but this is my favorite!!

  • Two AMERICAN greats!!!! Marvelous!!!

  • Great coupling - Tucker and Moffo!

  • Another OUTSTANDING excerpt from this very, very good (but sorely underrated) recording of LA TRAVIATA (perhaps because 5 years later Decca/London released a note-complete recording of this opera with Sutherland, Bergonzi, and Merrill (for the THIRD time on LP), with Pritchard conducting). Anyway, thank you VERY much for sharing this with us!!!

  • Well put, Maestro Sospello! Bravo.
