Rebetiko-fragment

"When a man is born,
a pain is born alongside
when the war is at its' peak
the blood cannot be counted
I'm burning, I'm burning
throw more oil in the fire
I'm drowning, I'm drowning
throw me in a sea that's deep.

I swore in your eyes
which for me were like the Evangelium
the knife-cut you gave me
I'd turn for you into laughter..."

  • I'm greek.

my grandfather and great grandfather came from asia minor in 1922.

despite all the bullshit, turks and greeks are very similar. everybody in asia minor has been fucking each other for thousands of years. we are all essentially the same.

nationalism and propaganda has convinced us all otherwise.

but the truth remains. all our cultures have been deeply influenced by each other.

    one love. one people. peace.

  • I am Turkish, I agree with you

    kingodysseas, peace.....

  • i dont understand any words in this song and i am turkish... but i listen this thirty times in a row... i am a nationalist of turkiye but i dont hate greeks cause they do what have to do. but we have problems what depends real facts. we had their nations nearly 400 years and they dont like us what rivals in a same position... in cyprus all of us know what they do. but u have to know this we are similar. thanks for reading. regards..

  • I'm Greek, and I don't fully agree with you ...

Stop generalizing that every Greek and Turk have inter-mingled with one another for thousands of years! Many have and many have not due to religious beliefs and for other political reasons. Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Assyrians, and other minority tribes have lived together in harmony and respect, in the Asia Minor region, for hundreds of years based on good economic and regional reasons. It was the rise of the Young Turks that ended this all!

  • @kingodysseas I recently read this lovely book called "Middlesex"...gathered some of what you're saying from there

  • I'm Turkish. I want my greeks back. Who could do that? No one. Fuck all of idiot dead politicians!

  • Greeks proved during history that they are brave and excelent soldiers. Turks themselves ove Constantinople the Russians, British and Frensh, who protected you from the Russians, who otherwise would have taken you over several times... who can be prouder than the precestors of the people who fought at Roupel, Pindos, Messologgi, Mani, Ellassona, Gaugamela, Thermopilae, Marathon...... You had the luck, to meet us in our weakest period, while you were at your strongest... thats it.

  • @kingodysseas read george horton's blight of asia, written from a first hand perspective of 1922
