@jackneefus, you had the wrong information. Harbin was never a part of Russia, but one of the closest Chinese city to Russia. there was truly alot of poor foreign people fled to Harbin to find a shelter during the war in the last century, a lot of Russian businessman as well.Therefore a period of time Harbin contained quite much of the Russian culture that still effects the city today, including buildings,language,civilizatio
n and the residents way of living. -

I have been there, but not at the right time to catch the ice festival. Harbin was part of Russia at one time and still has some Russian buildings. Not that far from the Siberian border. All Chinese talent and money -- saw very few Westerners.
