NORTH SAANICH -- Saanich Police believe urban poachers are using compound crossbows to stalk and kill deer in busy urban neighbourhoods.
Sgt. Dean Jantzen says the velocity of an arrow shot from a crossbow is somewhere around 500 feet per second. He says it can easily kill a full sized deer, and could kill a person if they mistakenly were caught in the crossfire.
A bullet from a pistol and an arrow shot from a crossbow equally penetrated a piece of ¾ inch plywood.
He says that's why officers want to catch the person running around shooting deer.
Yesterday a Toronto man died after he was shot in the back with a crossbow.
