In this presentation at USPRA's 34th Annual Conference, Dr. Fred Frese, himself a person with schizophrenia who was once put away as "insane", describes some of what he sees as behavioral, linguistic, and attitudinal attributes, including those of mental health professionals, that continue to be barriers to recovery and integration for the members of this traditionally ostracized population.

Over 90% of persons with serious mental illnesses who were, or would have been, in public psychiatric hospitals a generation ago are no longer there. They now live in the community. Most of those who have been released continue to have disabilities and have difficulties finding a respectful place in society. Many of the attitudes, customs, and laws that society has today are holdovers from the not-so-distant past when society's response to persons with serious mental illnesses was to "put them away".
