I wrote this poem last year (Nov. 10/10) and since then it has been short listed and will be published in the Poetry Institute of Canada's annual poetry anthology in December 2011. To me this is a very important message so pass it along and share it with all you know.

Poppies.
Too many poppies on the ground,
For all to see yet walk around.
Not enough pinned onto lapels,
These two things a sad story tells.
On Juno and Walcheren Isle
Canadian sons in rank and file,
Won hard fought days and lived to see
A bitter peace and victory,
And losses too our fathers saw
Dunkirk, Arnhem and Ortona,
In England's skies and wat'ry deep
Bloody Dieppe our minds must keep,
But sad this list is yet not all
A catalogue of loss and fall
Remains as living minds recall
And carves yet more in hallowed hall.
So bend that pin or seal behind
And give that poppy all your mind,
And honour loss with metal stem
And say "We will remember them."
Too many poppies scattered round,
So stop and take it off the ground,
And give it to a peer and tell,
Why this day we dress our lapel.
