The vote for dope has begun, if proposition 19 passes in California tomorrow it will be legal to sell, possess and grow Marijuana. Its decriminalisation will reduce government costs massively but at what cost?

Groaning under the weight of a $19 billion deficit, California has hatched a plan to legalise its cannabis trade. In the 60s cannabis was something that hippies smoked to get high, but since then public attitudes have changed radically. Now, it is California's biggest cash-crop. Tom Ammiano of the California Assembly, a one-time warrior on the war on drugs, argues that legalising a $16 billion industry "could go a long way" to easing the near-bankrupt state's problems. A poll shows that Californians will vote yes to a legal marijuana trade. Not because they want to smoke it, but because they want to tax it.

  • @QuantumQuacks shut up..troll

  • This is already legal in CA if you have a RX. This is why Prop. 19 didn't pass. Just too many pot grower and pothead wanted deregulation.

  • @QuantumQuacks That stuff does happen but I think we can both agree that it's much rarer than you are making it out to be. And also so what? Shouldn't people have the right to ingest whatever they want as long as it's not hurting anyone else? It's their body and you want to keep it illegal because it's 'potentially' dangerous? Then let's make cigarettes illegal and alcohol illegal. Hell, why stop there. Let's outlaw fast food and driving because some people get hurt doing that. *rolls eyes*

  • @QuantumQuacks Yeah, you're right. A lot of the big selling growers are violent BECAUSE it's illegal. The gangs want to protect their profits. If it were legal then it would put all of those criminal organizations here and across the border out of a lot of their business. We would gain money through taxing it and save money from spending a ton on the DEA (40% of their business is weed) and from all of the non-violent pot users that fill our prisons that the tax payers are all paying for.

  • @QuantumQuacks National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - Drivers under the influence of alcohol alone (about 40 percent of the sample) were significantly more likely than drug-free drivers to be deemed responsible for their accidents. But drivers under the influence of marijuana alone (about 1 percent of the sample) were no more likely than drug-free drivers to be deemed responsible. "There was no indication that cannabis by itself was a cause of fatal crashes," the report says.

  • It didn't pass. It was a very good chance that those who were going to vote for Prop 19 were too high to make it to the polls or mail in their ballots. Whatever the case I am sure it will discourage those who wish to smoke marijuana from continuing to do so. And I am sure that the status quo (those who currently grow and deal pot to the law enforcement establishment and business who receive billlions per year to "fight it") are happy that it is still against the law.
