Spearfishing: A Dance with a Wahoo

While diving in the warm blue waters of the Coral Sea, 570km off the coast of Queensland, Australia, my son and dive partner took this great footage of my first wahoo capture. Please note the killing method used here is far more humane than the long lines or net capture of fish that we see on our supermarket shelves.

love the video man! i always take a shit every time i see my marker taking a dive like that, after shooting a wahoo or a tuna. i have heard of stories of people who have lost fish, gear and marker since it was pulled down so far that i gave way under the pressures of the depths.

I know what what you mean. I lost everything to a dogtooth once. I was devastated. Half an hour later my float popped up and everything was there... everything but the fish. Actually you can see it on You Tube on the video called Coral Sea Teaser at 2:38. It was a very deep dive and I was really busting so I couldn't put any fight on the fish.

Fantastic video!...From a bluewater fisher/diver of over 20 years...you captured the almost religious feeling of the entire experience.

Music score was exqusite and perfectly matched to the graceful, respectful way this fish was harvested.

The handling and quick dispatchment of the fish was flawless.

I totally enjoyed almost being in the moment (at one with God and His creation).

Yep, respect for the killing method. It seems that many of the methods used by hunters in killing an animal sacrifices humane killing methods for efficiency and quantity of capture. It's unfortunate that the wider society is unaware of these more cruel acts. If they were then fishing and other animal quantities would probably drop and the price go up. Most people would rather turn a blind eye than feel the burn in the back pocket. All we can do is live by example.

@JudgeW well down here in Miami Fl. US we don't have any dogtooth, but you would occasionally run into some nice schools of yellowfin as well as blackfin tuna in the golf and they can give you a run for your money.
