every new mobile thing that comes out is dubbed the "iphone killer" but comes out to be far less Ive owned the google phone and mytouch and windows mobile and all that bullshit and i always come back to my iPhone

It is real, go to google and search for android. It's Googles Mobile project. This is an example of someones work on Googles platform for an interface.
Give it a year, you'll see this and many other user interfaces for android soon.
Its open source, so anyone who wants to can improve it, so don't be so surprised.
