  • (part 3 of 3) Now I'm getting all Howard Hughes-ey. Errol Morris is killing me softly, but with a screenplay instead of a song, a camera rather than a guitar. Odds are I'll need to see a head-shrinker before I can fully realize the High Life.

  • ...I still hear the disapproval in my father's voice, echoing off the walls of the workshop, as I rub my hands like Lady MacBeth: "No," he scolds in dismay, "You don't need soap and water." The grease is gone but the Goop remains. It remains still. So we wash our hands in Kerosene or Go-Jo or Goop. When all else fails we resort to eating powdered sugar donuts, kept sanitary in their protective skin. But we save water for the brewers. Now I'm getting all Howard Hughes-ey. Errol

  • This one's maybe my favorite. It doesn't have the best best text, but the imagery is satisfyingly disturbing and worked to optimal effect with phenomenal camera-work. Morris ingeniously identifies and exacerbates the tension in handwashing without water. Notice how the camera's focus tightens on that dry spigot as the man's hands load up on Goop, and scrub, and dry. No water. Except in the can (a bit too small for those sausagey Wisconsin fingers).
