Electromite Carrier System is the full realization of an animation technique I began experimenting with years ago. Studying digital arts at University I was introduced to the works of Norman McClaren and Oskar Fischinger. Films like Be Gone Dull Care and Komposition in Blau expanded my definition of animation from being cartoon to expressive art form.
ECS is my 5th experimental animation in as many years. It was created during 3 months of winter in Oregon, which is reflected in the mood of the piece. The imagery is comprised of digital photos depicting organic patterns and textures in nature.
Combining and transforming the visual properties of color and light in each image over time creates the illusion of motion. Layers of digital paint are incorporated to accentuate form and color values. A library with 100s of motion clips was created, each with distinct qualities, to be used in the film.
Animating the digital photos was an exploratory process which revealed alien-like landscapes, rock formations, liquid pools and more. Viewing daily production playback I imagined receiving video feed from another world, and I controlled the camera. I originally heard the soundtrack (by Brad Assam) during inital production stages. The ambient and chaotic flows harmonized well
with abstract imagery and I would often listen to it.
Excellent! The colour and sound just saturate the senses!
