Film Description: Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back is the gripping true story of 3 astronauts stranded in space and NASA's unrelenting effort to bring them safely home. The 87-minute documentary contains extensive archival footage of the aborted moon mission and first-hand accounts from crew members Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert, as well as commentary from family members and NASA officials. You'll witness every tense moment--from the onboard explosion to the failure of the guidance and power systems to Lovell's ominous statement, "Houston: We've Got a Problem"--as the ill-fated 1970 space mission is chronicled. Dramatic computer effects are a special highlight of the film.

One of the best movies I've seen! Truly NASA's finest hour!

Agreed. This is one Movie where all the Technical-Talk, as it were, actually Adds to the Film. It plays a very important part.

I'd say it is. Sometimes when watching it on DVD I listen to the Commentary section by the real Jim Lovell and his Wife. He explains a lot of whats happening technically on the Screen and explains the similarities between that and what really happened to the Mission. Very interesting.

I wonder how many kids over the years have been inspired to become engineers from this one scene

We gotta find a way to make this... fit into the hole for this... using nothing but that.

It's reminiscent of the first Hubble servicing mission, when Jeff Hoffman & Story Musgrave were trying to close the doors of the Hubble, and they wouldn't latch properly. Musgrave suggested to Houston that a ratcheting strap would have the torque to help hold the doors closed until they could latch them shut. The engineers on the ground said no way, but the Flight Director said OK, try it. It worked!

And the hilarious thing is? In Real Life, this idea was come up with by one man, while he was driving in to work. Hollywood didn't think that was believable, so we get a whole team. NASA was just that badass back then.
