Sugarfoot's OHIO PLAYERS are a funky-pop-R&B blend of master musicians surrounding the exuberant and soulful Sugarfoot, the signature Voice and personification of the original OHIO PLAYERS. With virtuoso bassist Trae Pierce, a second generation OP member, now returning to the band again, as Musical Director, Sugarfoots OHIO PLAYERS perform all the 1 Sugar hits everyone expects from an OHIO PLAYERS concert. Pierce utilizes a gifted stage band to deliver a monster bottom-heavy and horn-stabbing funk sound to rival the legend of the OHIO PLAYERS live show and honor the tradition of their music to support Sugarfoot. The group that eventually became the OHIO PLAYERS formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 1959, as the Ohio Untouchables. With a name change and the addition of Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner as lead-vocal front man, the group evolved and emerged with a GOLD debut 21 album, Pain, and Top 30 R&B title-track single in 1971. The follow up album Pleasure went all the way to 4, and dropped a 1 Black single, Funky Worm, which also rose to 4 Pop. Their next release charted up to 12 Black with title track Ecstasy, while the album charted to 19. Then in 1974 came the PLATINUM blow out. The 1 Album Skin Tight delivered a 2 R&B / 13 Pop title-track single and a 6 R&B single Jive Turkey. The next PLATINUM album, Fire, was a back-to-back, double- chart 1 album, at R&B and Pop, but this time out Sugarfoot sported a double-chart 1 title track single, too. Fire proved to be their hottest and still most requested radio smash. The album also featured the 6 R&B single I Want To Be Free, a social commentary. The album Honey continued the PLATINUM studio album tradition charting 1 R&B / 2 Pop. It also brought Sweet Sticky Thing hitting 1 R&B / 33 Pop Singles, FOPP hitting 9 R&B / 30 Pop, and another huge evergreen hit, Love Rollercoaster, doubling at 1 R&B / 1 Pop.

  • Anyone know anything about when Sugars new album will be out?

It's been a long time coming, what's up?

  • @Dearap well, sugar had a couple of strokes and some of the younger group members coerced Diamond into kicking Sugar out of the group. How can you put the man out of the group who is the Brand?? Anyway, so Sugar said fine and put together his own backing group. That split have never happened... Shame on you Diamond!

  • @avp0713 Yo! Nooo, not funny, never doubt a man when he's telling you his history... that is based on only what you know of him. The band started back in 1959 and were called the Ohio Untouchables... I believe Jame's first big hit was around 1958. Though the band had some changes over time, as they all do, I believe that verifies what 'Foot' said. Peace! :)

  • Funny how Sugarfoot said Ohio Players been around since James Brown.... oh really? lol I don't think that's correct. He prolly just misspoke about that, it happens when you're being interviewed. JB been recording since the '50's. I think the Ohio Players came on up around 1970 or thereabouts..

  • @yippee2000 ....meaning the original lead guy from back in the day. And apparently I was right. The horn section was incredible. It was a beautiful summer day, and it was a total party. Here was the Ohio Players, FREE, outdoors, in the year 2001/2, still kicking it! I felt so privileged to have seen him, and hope to see them again. They did an instrumental piece I'd never heard before that was AWESOME!!! I will never forget that show. Thank you Sugarfoot!!!

  • I used to work in Lower Manhattan and in 2001 or 2002 or so, I happened to hear that the Ohio Players were doing a free show down in Battery Park? Whaaaa?? I thought! I knew I had to go even though none of my friends were interested. But I've always been a 70s soul/funk fan. Well let me just tell YOU...that show was off the hook. Sugarfoot was there leading the band, and while I didn't know at the time, I thought because of his age, his ease and presence on stage, that he must be THE lead.

  • Their show in Mobile for the 2011 Bayfest was AWESOME, baby!!!!

  • Well it's good that you skipped it, because you missed it.

  • Ohio Players played the Pomona Fair, in L.A. County, this past weekend. When I found out Sugarfoot had his own version of the Players, I decided to skip this show.

  • SugarFoot Bonner is having a rough time on his right side, as a result of his stroke(s), but I'm glad to see he's still sharing his talent. He's been around a long time and has made a lot of hits. I hope all these living legends see the cash. Everybody is copying their "original" stuff and not paying...
