http://larkandspur.com/music/once-in-france/ Sometimes spelled Annachie Gordon this beautiful scottish folk song first appeared in print during the 1820's and tells the tale of two lovers who died of broken hearts when they could not marry. This song has been recorded by such notable artists as Mary Black, Sinead O'Connor and Loreena McKennitt. We hope you enjoy our performance of this lovely ballad. Lark and Spur.

  • how can you reference Sinead O'Connor without mentioning Mary Black???? Sadly its not on youtube, but she sang the defininitive version of this number during a Christy Moore gala for irish tele about 1980, most moving thing i ever heard. Only scolding for the lack of Black, in all other respects i mean alot of respect, this is a sweet version. Bravo!

  • Didn't know that Mary had recorded it. Have amended the description to include her.

  • Nice one. Anachie Gordon was ma Granda by teh way (nae relation). I was just thinkin when ah watched the sunrise this mornin' "there's the sun". Ah can be quite deep at times, but I only speak for masel. A spokesman for no one. Don't put all that crap on me. How can others write books about me,,when ah don't know what ah' m talkin aboot masel, Shuggy Dylan ps Scotland rocks!! Thought ah seen the Loch Ness Monster wance, but jist the wife wi her teeth oot

  • Sorry but the definitive version is by Nic Jones in my humble opinion.

  • @educution Actually the Mary Black version is on youtube.

    Lewbook

  • @NSResponder thank you, i'll probly need a couple of glasses of waters rehydration after this to compensate for my leaky face.

  • @educution it's on YouTube now: watch?v=dN2tAU5J0mg

  • Loreena's version is almost painfully beautiful. Thought it had ruined me for all other versions, but this one by Lark and Spur is wonderful. Not as lush a production as Loreena's but that's one reason why I like it. The vocals and lyrics are more up-front and immediate, but still very soft and delicate. Beautiful interpretation!

  • 07kyal, Loreena's is the very best. Thanks for mentioning it.

  • @07kyal
