part 2 of 2: On a recent trip of mine I've used the fallkniven f1 in it's home country Sweden for lots of stuff. You'll see all the action during the canoe trip across some lakes. Firemaking, batonning, fishing, bushcraft stuff, building shelters etc., putting the f1 to good use.

In an earlier review of mine on youtube, I already expressed my admiration for the f1 and you'll see in this video why that is so.

It held up really well, kept it's sharpness very well, was easy to sharpen with a small spyderco pocketstone (doublestuff) and the edge did not chip out. There's some sort of urban legend out there that the f1 will chip under heavy use. It will chip if you hit rocks and sand etc. So will every other knife in the world. But during my heavy batonning sessions a couple of times a day and in all the other use I put it through that week, after some times that I dropped it on the ground: NO chipping at all!

With that out of the way, let me say again that I think it's an excellent knife, cuts really well, has good ergonomics and comfortable grip, a thick fat spine and a good blade shape with a strong full tang construction. This is a knife you will have no regrets about if you get it.

I pimped the knife with a custom kydex sheath by well known Dutch sheath maker Martin Swinkels (http://martinsheaths.blogspot.com) and he again did an excellent job. Check out my rc-4 review on the Scottish west highland way for another review on one of his sheaths.

THe philosophy for this sheath was that it should function as a sort of grab 'n go sheath system which provides me with a knife (tool), light (see in the dark/navigation), fire (firesteel/warmth), paracord (building and tying stuff) and a sharpening stone (keeping my tools in perfect shape). In this way it's providing me with the basics for building a shelter, providing warmth and a way to signal (firesteel/torch) or to find a way home in the dark. The maxpedition pouch on the sheath can hold other stuff too. A leatherman could be very handy, whistle, compass etc. you name it. I will use a fallkniven dc-4 stone the next time, since it will fit better in the pouch.

The only thing on my wishlist for this sheath is a rotating teklok mechanism, allowing me to quickly switch the orientation of the knife for carrying it in different positions. As far as Martin and I know at the moment, this does not yet exist.

THe only thing that did not function very well with this knife was filleting fish. I could not get a clean cut along the ribs and the spine of the fish because the blade is a little too thick to be a good filleting knife... But hey, I could still eat it :)

table of contents:
part 1
- introduction and some scenes of the trip (warning, dead animals)
- sheath by Martin Swinkels, what does it do and what's on it. Firesteel, fenix E01, spyderco doublestuff, paracord, pace counting beads, maxpedition and betalight.
- ants and ant hills, size reference with the f1
- cleaning the sheath, the ins and outs.
part 2
- getting the eggs out of the ant hill with a good trick
- making tarp pegs to stabilize your tarp
- splitting some wood to get to the dry part
- using birch bark to get a fire going
- batonning wood for a star fire on a windy island
- camp setup, tarp, dd frontline hammock and my washed socks
- burning mushrooms (you know, the kind with which you can carry fire)
- conclusion: awesome knife!

  • How did you make the knife sit on you'r belt like that ? Leaning?

    Please respond!

    - Filip!

  • @TwoFacedPotato with a tek-lok

  • Nice Vid, but please for the future a little more respekt to the nature. In the part one you erected a big lean-to with lots of fresh cut spruce, instead of using your tarps also plunder the antsnest and making extra blackspots in the land with your campfire, destroying the small plants and lichens. Also your crowded in a big group, so you have to use the windskids and grounds.

  • @jackknife68 to give you a little update, the lean-to is still standing there in almost perfect condition I heard a couple of days ago. A friend sent a picture. It's still usable. So in essence, I built a sustainable shelter. How's that for environmentally friendly?

  • @zyhano showing some beautiful scenery is one part, the other think is, everythink you did is forbidden by the allemannsretten.

In my opinion you are totaly wrong, with your attitude. Even putting a hand on the antsnest is a real nogo !

You are making camping in one of the beatyfullest invironments europe habitates, the nordic people are real open to tourists with their nature.

In Canada just being outside and staying on prepared campgrounds you need permits, don'T let it come to this

  • The land access laws in Scotland are almost identical to the Swedish allemannsretten. You can camp almost anywhere provided you are outside the curtilage of private property, e.g. someone's 'obvious' garden area, and as long as you behave responsibly with regard to fires and wildlife, etc. Scotland is far more similar to Nordic countries in its attitudes towards the land than it is to the Anglo-Saxon notions of land ownership and so-called right-of-way.

  • Thanks for sharing, I have been looking at the F1 myself. take care

  • Hi Zyhano, excellent video. Because of your review, I'm going to order a sheath from Martin. By the way, I notice in the video, you were carry a black pouch Could you provide me the name of the brand and it is any good? I'm planning to get a pouch to carry and protect my Suunto Global M3 compass 125mm x 65mm x 15mm. Any recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks. P.S. not easy to find a decent one online. I'm based in the UK

  • I do not know who you are or where you come from, but I know what you are; 0och there is someone living in the wild, hope your "bullshit" works when you are flirting with girls (but in your case probably really young male children). Your perversan deviation...

  • Nice video, what knves do you have in total? Also what knife for hunting?

  • Great video and review! Just curious, what kind of pants are you wearing in this video? Brand and model name would be great. Thanks!

  • Thank you mr. Dutchman for coming to my country, you seem to be a person who can enjoy what we enjoy - the quiet outdoors and the nature. Next time though, please leave the live trees and the ants alone. Our law is very clear and we like it that way.
