French Fisherman Protest Over High Fuel Prices

French fishermen are protesting increased oil prices. They put up a road blockade around an oil refinery in La Rochelle in western France. Here's more on the story.

STORY:
Fishermen in France have been protesting the increasing cost of oil. This Sunday they set up a road blockade using burning tires to prevent access to the oil terminal in the port of La Rochelle.

France's Agriculture Minister Michel Barnier is scheduled to meet with the protesters on Wednesday. They will discuss the problems of record oil prices costing more than $125 U.S. dollars per barrel and possible solutions. Only if the outcome is favorable will the fishermen remove the blockade.

France has already demanded financial aid from the European Union in an attempt to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices. According to Barnier, the state has already handed over $30 million Euros of aid to the fishing industry this year, with another $23 million on the way. Barnier suggested handouts should be accelerated to help fishermen cope with the dramatic increase in fuel prices.

La Rochelle is just one of numerous ports on the Atlantic Channel and Mediterranean coastlines blockaded by the fisherman since last week. News reports on French radio stations suggested that nearly 20 other ports were hit by protests on Tuesday.

What are they really protesting? The depletion of a finite non-renewable resource? The gas companies' inability to create more gas out of thin air? You can cry and whine, but it doesn't do shit. Everyone knows gas is a non-renewable resource; everyone who isn't an idiot knows that this would eventually cause gas prices to rise. So why the fuck does the government have to subsidize the people's stupidity? It rewards gas guzzlers and punished responsible people!
