The Tory conference in Manchester 2009 - Is Dave simply playing for time so he won't have to keep his half-hearted promise to hold a UK referendum on the Lisbon treaty?

(Hat tip to Mary Ellen Synon)

"The legal position is clear. The Lisbon Treaty has to be ratified by all 27 states before it comes into force. Any time up to that point, the instrument of ratification of any state which has ratified can be revoked. If there is a general election before all 27 member states have ratified the treaty, then the United Kingdom can revoke its ratification. The treaty will then be dead unless the UK reinstates its ratification following a "Yes" vote in a referendum.

However, if it is ratified by all 27 member states before the time of the general election, legally it takes effect and supersedes earlier treaties. Then it cannot be amended or revoked except by further treaty or an instrument equivalent to a treaty, such as a protocol. Britain would need to get agreement of all other member states for that."

  • the debt is a lead weight on the country and could drown us. beware!

  • lol the ghost of 1992 :)

  • @lucius1976 - No problem with that just that they forgot to get the UK people's consent. It is called "DEMORACY"

  • Of course the EU is more than a international organization. Its aim always was to form a "ever closer union". This they stated even back in in the treaties of rome back in 1957!. Decades before the UK joined. So, whats so suprising in the Lisbon Treaty? It just one more step in that direction. Obviously the UK didn´t bother to read the Treaties of Rome when in joined in 1973.

  • "Is there a 'new' order in the world?"

Yes, it's not a time anymore where only one country gets a real say in the world, like for example the British empire in it's time; or until recently the US. Now also China, India, Brazil, etc.

want to have their say in the world. This leads inevitably to conflicts of interest in which only big players count. If a small country wants to protect their interests they need to team up with others who share the same interests.

Now I know UKIP doesn't think...

  • I don't know what 'UKIP' thinks as it is a collection of many people so perhaps you are in a better position to enlighten us?

As I don't watch 'conspiracy videos', again tell us what you think?

Is there a 'new' order in the world?

If you have some very powerful organisations, (UN EU NAFTA plus the numerous quangos, N.G.O.'s, climate change lobby and fake taxpayer funded charities), that have a similar world view; all networking and working together for a particular agenda, does this add up?

  • Oh noes! Your readers know now, don't they!!! I must look like such a hypocrite!

Oh please... I don't really expect you to answer the question, but your arguments for the UK leaving the EU; because it 'costs so much' and the 'UK is losing all it's sovereignty' and all - those arguments I've heard. Lots of people on You Tube though believe in 'the new world order' - hundreds of video's about it. So, a simple question: Do you think UKIP views 'the new world order' as a reality, yes or no?

  • So our readers now know that you haven't read either the Lisbon treaty or 1984............
