Vajrakilaya is a wrathful manifestation of Vajrasattva, the Buddha of purification. The practice of Vajrakilaya focuses on removing intense inner and outer obstacles to peace, happiness, and enlightenment. "Drubchen" means "great accomplishment" in Tibetan and is one of the most elaborate forms of Vajrayana Buddhist practice.

Vajrakilaya is the most important yidam or tantric wisdom deity of the Nyingma tradition and was the preeminent yidam of Guru Rinpoche, and Khandro Yeshe Tsogyal is famed for attaining enlightenment through the Vajrakilaya practice. As a wisdom deity, Vajrakilaya transverses the full path to enlightenment and creates auspicious conditions for the progress, deepening and fulfilment of spiritual practice. The special quality of Vajrakilaya is the ability to clear away obstacles and to transform all the emotional afflictions; and especially the most destructive emotion of hatred, into enlightened wisdom and compassion.

The complete Vajrakilaya Drubchen is often performed at Tibetan New Year to prevent the obstacles from the past year from carrying forward into the New Year. It is said in Tibet that participation in a single week's Drubchen practice generates as much merit and potential realisation as a year's retreat.
