'Old Shanghai' - The Bewitched

The Bewitched are two members of Forgotten Fish Memory Orchestra, Astral Gonad and Makmed the Miller. This tune which is taken from their debut CD is called 'Old Shanghai'. The film is not actually Shanghai but a place called DragonTown in the city of ChengDu. There have been tremendous and difficult changes for local people in Chinese cities all over the country as China rushes at breakneck speed towards hyper-modernisation, without a backward glance. Old communities are evicted to make way for hi-tech modern skyscrapers. The community here in Chengdu simply refuse to be moved on from where they have lived for generations.They go about their daily lives surrounded by the chaos caused by the tearing down of their homes. At night when the construction workers have left the street takes on some of its old character and fills with cafes, restaurants and social centres.People come from all over the city to show support for the disappearing neighbourhood.The nightlife goes on until daybreak when the builders return to work.
This footage was filmed by Makmed the Miller who was delighted to stay for a while in Dragontown and experienced first hand the sincere hospitality and friendliness of these resilient people.
