Do you need to remove a faulty SMD SOIC IC? Do you work for Ebenezer Scrooge like I used to and you don't have a hot air rework station, just your trusty Weller? Here is a quick and easy way of achieving this. If your quick (do not overheat the IC), watch the wire angle and tension, you will have a good PCB and an IC that can be reused if needed. This can be used for removing QFP's too if you like a challenge!

NOTE: I show what happens when the wire is at too sharp an angle, this may lift traces and it WILL bend pins and knacker your IC!

Tools needed: Soldering iron, solder, desolder wick, flux (optional) and thin enamelled copper wire. You can get the wire from transformer windings.

  • what is this flux for ?

  • @megapwn333 Its basically a cleaning agent. It helps the solder flow properly and ensures good joints.

  • This is really awesome. Although you can get a Atten hot air stations from eBay really cheap nowadays. I picked one up for 50 bucks including shipping.

  • @Kankki1 Yup, worth knowing though. Hot air stations are so damn cheap now. I've got a Aoyue 825++, totally rocks for under £100! Must do a review of it sometime.

  • Thanks for the video .. i just did it to desolder a soic-8 without flux and solder wick.. it really works.. the chip is usable, no problems at all.

  • @Lyhan24 Cheers, glad this little trick has been of some use!
