This tip is a companion to the book ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKIN' TIPS by Mike Clelland. It's a really cool book published by FalconGuides.
Is it okay to drink untreated water in the backcountry? I feel strongly that the answer is SOMETIMES! In a pristine wilderness environment, some water can be determined to be safe with a simple bit of decision making.

Thank you for this video! I've been drinking from High Sierra rivers and streams since 1973 and NEVER have had a problem.
It surprises me is how many of us have bought into the "dirty water" idea. Look at where we are (in the high country) look at where our water comes from, and look at the volume of water moving (especially this year--WOW.)
I made four trips to the high Sierras this summer, drank lots of water, and the most dangerous thing I did was eat at crappy restaurants on 395 or 14!

Great videos, fun and very informative. Like you I believe that given the right precautions you can safely drink untreated water and enjoy it. I'm very surprised that the water treatment nazis haven't slammed this video for suggesting you can drink water directly from the source. But I'm glad they haven't.
Thanks for making these videos, and I'm loving the new book! Cheers.
