A US Nickel contains 75% copper and 25% nickel. The 1938 through 1942 D versions of the nickel are also made of the same composition, but generally are sold for a premium over their melt value due to rarity. As of Feb. 2012, the melt value of a Nickel is 5.6 cents. It costs the US Mint around 9 cents to make a nickel. They are looking to change the composition and sooner or later it is going to happen. There is no sorting that is needed for Nickels right now. Once the composition is changed, people will have to start sorting out the 75 / 25% Nickels from the cheap ones.

  • did you sort through all of those to see if any are silver?

  • @St33l3rs45 no, I might take a look one day but a silver nickel is only worth around $2 and I don't think there are many, if any, there.

  • If I Had $1000 And was looking for short term, (fast money) would half dollars be the way to go? I'm trying to look for the coin that I can sell to collectors...

  • @psavela I have no idea. It would all be based on the silver spot. Silver has had a nice run up. If it goes back to $29, it might be a good time to buy. I'm no expert though.

  • "hey chickens" lol

  • Problem is you can not legally melt US currency. Unless I missed something, you will never be able to actually cash in for any more or less then it's actual value or it's collectible value but never for it's metals value. I could be wrong, p;ease correct me if I am. Thanks

  • if you think about it- the Nickle was the first coin debased (from a half dime)..Ironic its the only currently in production coin worth its value today..the end :)

  • @psavela Short term is anybody's guess. The nickel/copper half dollars have no collector value unless they're flawless.

  • 90 rolls? 40 pizza rolls :)

  • @terminal99 well maybe ud have t sort nickels if you wanted to sperate out the buffalos, war nickels and regular jeffersons
