Curiously, the Indianapolis 500 was a round of the F1 championship throughout the 1950s although F1 drivers rarely ventured across. Ascari in 1952, John Fitch failed to qualify in 1953. Fitch is from Indiana and would go on to race a couple of times in F1, although he found far greater success in sports cars. Giuseppe Farina had to withdraw in 1957 when Keith Andrews crashed fatally before the race in the car they were sharing. There may have been others I've forgotten.
Thank you very much for finding and uploading this film. However this is not "the first f1 race" this is simply the Indy 500, nothing more. I'm not sure why you think that unless f1 adopted the indy 500 in 1950 but that wouldnt make any sense to me. Anyway thanks again for uploading...
This is awesome footage! Johnnie Parsons was lucky the race ended when it did. On the morning of the race Parsons' crew member discovered a crack in the engine block. With no time to change motors,Parsons decided to run hard, lead as many laps as he could, to win as much lap money as possible, then just drop out when the engine blows. Then, the rains came. But make no mistake about it..."Gentleman Johnnie" Parsons was a great driver. Thanks so much for posting this treasure.
@dsriggs I suppose Mobil Oil Company. Did you notice the flying horse logo on the credits and the ad during the film?
