@HouriBee I meant if you saw somebody in the Western world wearing "traditional Arab clothing" you might rightly suspect that they were a Muslim. If you saw somebody wearing those clothes in the middle east, it would be harder to tell. Ultimately it isn't just one thing that would lead you to discover a person's religious affiliation, obviously.
-
@HouriBee right. "Islam" is a religion and "Muslims" are people who follow that religion. Just as "Christians" are people who follow the religion of Christianity. How well people follow it is another matter, but it's a category and classification. Many Traditional Muslims wear arab clothing, but this is only because the religion started in Arabia. Many Muslims (even ones of Arab ethnicity) do not do this.

@XSC3 I agree
-
@XSC3 "Traditional Muslim clothing"? Muslim is a people that follow Islam. All Arabs are not Muslim. That's all I was trying to explain. Arab is the "race" and Muslims fall under the Religion of Islam.
-
@HouriBee now if you came across someone in the west wearing "traditional Muslim clothing" (which is simply native Arab costume, again, since it originated as a religion amongst the Arabs), you might make a good guess that they are Muslim, but that's about it. you can't tell from their race, or their language (since there are Jews and Christians who speak arabic). and you can't tell from a name (people think Obama is Muslim because of his middle name?)
-
@HouriBee what's being discussed is that many people in the west (especially America) assume when they see somebody with dark complexion (but not "african american"), dark hair, etc. especially if they have a vaguely "middle eastern" sounding accent or wear strange clothes (strange by their standards) that the person is an "arab" and a "Muslim." Plenty of arabs are not Muslim and plenty of non-arabs are Muslim.
-
@HouriBee actually no.
A "muslim" is a follower of the religion known as Islam. There is no "muslim people" as if it were an ethnic group, tribe, nation, race, or culture. Muslims come from all races, ethnic groups, nations, etc. The stereotype is that they're all arabs, because it started with a group of Arabs in the 7th century. Today most Muslims are actually asian.
-
@XSC3 Muslim is a people, not a religion. Islam is a religion. Race has nothing to do with it, lol.

If he threw up 300 red flags, they shouldn't have needed to profile him. I'm not saying that officials should "take it easy" on middle eastern people, I'm saying that they should be keeping an eye on people acting suspiciously, as opposed to using physical characteristics as an indicator. Police officers all say it's LESS effective to profile.
