I had a similar gripe - couldn't add my own music from Itunes - I'd found some nice Indian sitar music, imported it into Itunes in .MP3 format, but impossible to find it in Iphoto/Diaporama/Music. An update to Itunes 10,4 has solved the problem but why? Maybe Iphoto was looking in an OLD Itunes library from an earlier version - who knows, but if it has helped fine.
