Many new ESL teacher in places like Japan, Korea, China etc., often make a similar mistake. Something that can cause you to have a very difficult year of teaching. Instead of assuming the role of "teacher" from day 1, they try to assume the role of the student's friend or buddy. Often, when you want to be the "cool teacher" it eventually blows up in your face and can cause a classroom management nightmare!

What role should I assume when I start my first teaching assignment?
