  • @ppehaw - The work is not always easy, or glamorous, but it is all necessary. We clean and disinfect the farrowing rooms between sow groups to ensure the sows and their litters are not exposed to anything that could make them sick. Someone has to do the work, the pigs count on it.

  • I have worked on farm with hogs for years and we use farrowing crates. The crate is designed for the protection of the pigglets. I have never had a problem with using them. The fact is if a person was to raise hogs on dirt they would have far to many losses. Pigglets would be laid on, sows would eat the pigglets, diesase would run rampent, and pigglets would be vunarable to predators. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PORK PRODUCER.

  • @89aggrl nice. So your argument is that the farrowing crates are designed to eliminate the risk that they cause piglets?? What came first. the chicken or the egg? There's no risk without the farrowing crates, they cause the risk. It's confusing, I know but how about we take away the farrowing crate all together and let the pig have it's piglets in a normal area like I don't know...not a 2x4' metal cage?

  • @aityadeen123 they snip them off when young

  • I spent most of my teen years working in a hogbarn, farrow to finish, when my friends were screwing around after school I was washing farrowing crates with a commercial pressure unit and boiling water, sometimes I have nightmares I'm back on that job, not sure what the hell I was thinking to commit to trashy work like that, I believe it made me a stronger person

  • People who say the crates are ok because they protect the animals have been duped. The crates are used so the farmers can make as much money as possible. If pigs accidentally get crushed by their mothers and die, that's money going down the drain. These crates were not designed for animal welfare, they were designed to make the farmers more money. Period.

  • anybody who says farrowing crates are bad obviously dont know wat their talking about

  • @wellingtonhorses these are biosecure facilities.....spend some time researching that.

  • Having worked in the hog game for about 15 odd years, the best way i seen was outdoor farrowing, then indoor from weaning to sale. Dry sow and matings were done indoors, until the sow passed a preg test after 6weeks. The weaning of piglets at 3 weeks seen them average 5-7kgs. Most healthiest piglest ever.

Our weather had a rage of -5degrees C to 45 degrees C. Average size of each litter at bacon wieght of 100kgs was 11 pigs per sow.

But its hard to train a old hog farmer new tricks!

  • i want to work in your farm i like pigs and i want to have mi own farm in future if you need help write to mi email adress lucianlr@yahoo.com .thank you

  • 3:06 ,WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT PIG'S TAIL. it look like half of it is missing

  • I think the best solution to this problem is to Open your Family Farms so people can come and see what is really happening. That should solve all problems.
