(7/5/09) Howard Kurtz examines the tape to see what Dana Milbank muttered to Nico Pitney during an interlude between segments on Reliable Sources.
On a more important note, Kurtz concludes that Nico Pitney "asked the President a perfectly legitimate question, but he's sort of splitting hairs, he did orchestrate things with the White House and should just own up to it. Dana Milbank was a little harsh in his criticism, since Pitney's question was no softball, but Pitney's suggestion that my Washington Post colleague rolled over for President Bush is just wrong."

Its pretty obvious the President did not know what question Nico was going to ask, even if the President knew he was going to call on Nico. From what I understand, the Huffington Post does not have a regular seat at the press corp, so Nico's creative use of the internet field research was a likely factor in the invitation to sit for a question.
