What he actually said is since the french factory was outside the city, any outcomers at that time would have thought Montreal was an anglophone city, where it was not. The activity would have seem to be anglophone for anyone not from there...

(1/2) Gregory Charles is very wrong!!! He said that Montreal was an englophone city... True in terms of money, but damn wrong when considering the actual population and demography!: more than 80%-90% of Montreal's population was francophone at that time...

(2/2) Which was why the "Canadien de Montréal" was created: a team with a majority of french players to rival the Maroons, at a time when french people did not have the right to play in the "big league" because of some xenophobic perception from the anglophones of that era, thus playing with some french-english rivalry ans as such boost ticket sells for a new arena. It's clear that his whole analysis is biased.
