1996 PSA from Partnership For A Drugs Free America.

Shows a girl sitting on her bed in her bedroom while this guy talks about how sniffing drugs makes you feel, all of a sudden, water starts to flood into her bedroom, and fills her room up, and she drowns, because that's what the drugs make you feel like, apparently.

Powerful stuff, like most PSAs out there, which manage to have good impact. Although some PSAs are just down right weird, like that really, REALLY fucked up one where Joanna Cassidy takes off the mask to reveal Smokey Bear. That was just weird, but this is good, like most other PSAs from Partnership For A Drug Free America, which combine both cleverness and weirdness in one, like that freaky one with the snake.

Oh, I remember this little piece of nightmare fuel from my childhood! Screwed up my sleep pattern for a good month this ad did, I always thought that water would rush into my room as soon as I fell asleep.

like for me its kinda hauntingly beautiful, like at the age of 20. But as a 6 year old i swear this commercial scared the shit outta me like, i always kept hoping that she'd be able to open that window....

@tomczakchris I am glad you posted this...I've wondered for a long time, since seeing this air, I thought I remembered seeing a similar yet even more terrifying version of this ad. Shot in a similar vein, it had a different girl playing the part, setting on the bed as the room filled with water, it paralyzed me with fear...I think it might have predated this one by a few months or so, were there different versions shot or is my mind just manufacturing things? lol!

This commercial's effectiveness at stopping sniffing is debatable. It's effectiveness at promoting insomnia in children isn't.

When I was a little kid and this aired, I didn't know what they meant by sniffing. I thought they meant if you had a cold, like sniffling. I had a cold. I was terrified.

This was actually shot by a Director from the Netherlands, Will van der Vlugt. Tony Kaye would have been great, but this spot turned out beautify with Will. I was part of the creative team that came up with this concept back in 1995. Still one of my favorites. Glad to hear that it scared the piss out of you.

He's talking about sniffing glue or lighter fuel or something, which causes brain damage/death in the same way drowning would (because your brain isn't getting enough oxygen)
