The problem with religious wars is that religion is steeped in myths and superstition, some people were persecuted when they thought the world was round. They aren't persecuted anymore because we've proven it. As long there is a lack of hard fact in religion, there will be fighting I think.

Frankly, athiests have been among the most moral people I have ever met. Murder in the name of a god, political meme and/or greed and power are the top motivations behind genocide and always have been. Atheists as a "group" don't have a cultural or moral reason to kill. I fear religious fundamentalists far more than I could ever fear someone who simply wants freedom from religion!
