The Southern Gateway Chorus

For more than 50 years, Cincinnati's Southern Gateway Chorus has entertained audiences all over North America with their rich blend of barbershop harmony.

In 1993, the men of Gateway received four standing ovations in New York's fabled Carnegie Hall; we have been featured in the famous Chicago Theatre, Pittsburgh's Heinz Hall, and the Saddledome in Calgary, Canada.

When they performed at Cincinnati's Riverbend Music Center July 4, 1994, with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Keith Lockhart, and Pete Fountain, Enquirer columnist Janelle Gelfand wrote "...the Southern Gateway Chorus had the audience on its feet early and often." The chorus has also performed under Erich Kunzel's direction.

Southern Gateway has been awarded 22 medals in their 29 competitive appearances. Twice Southern Gateway Chorus has won the coveted gold medal, in 1973 and 1992. As past champion, Southern Gateway was honored to be selected to film a one-hour show at Music Hall for PBS in 1994. Titled "Keep America Singing",the show was hosted by Mitch Miller, and is still viewed nationally.

I am a singing guest of the SGC & I enjoy the commaradery every Tuesday. I have a condition called " Complex Regional Pain Syndrome" But singing seems to reduce the pain. We are currently singing music from "West Side Story".

One question I've never heard asked. Who came up with the name "Southern Gateway"?

I miss singing with this choir. I miss the Tuesday night rehearsals, fellowship, family atmosphere, and of course the chili! Moving to TN makes me unable to... but when I was in high school... this group really inspired my musicianship to grow as a professional musician and music teacher. My God Bless this chorus.
