Oh yeah man. They kept the spirits up. They stayed far behind the lines though. (Besides the buglers and drummer boys.) Many movies just fail to show this.

I've been a Civil War reenactor for 24 yrs & have known some of the board members over the years quite well. I would just like to say that IN MY OPINION its a shame how the current regime that has come to rule out there have mis-used and taken advantage of some of their reenactor friends. They seem to have forgotten where their bread is buttered, who it is that breaths life into their site, & who the public is REALLY there to see. In perspective I know many other sites that treat us like kings.
