Australia Seeks to Build-Up Military

Going on a roll since WW2.

*Australia has said it will buy 100 fighter aircraft and double the size of its submarine fleet in an attempt to keep pace with an "explosion" in military spending in Asian nations. The close U.S. ally released a blueprint covering military strategy for the next 20 years, including the purchase of 12 advanced new submarines that experts say could alarm China and accelerate an arms race in the Western Pacific. Australia has already begun a $44 billion upgrade of the military, including new air warfare destroyers, cruise missiles, stealth fighters, aircraft carriers, tanks and helicopters. But with the country on the brink of recession, the centre-left government had been under pressure to rein in spending amid market expectations that cumulative borrowings could top A$200 billion in the budget. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd steered around those concerns, releasing a document charting a $72 billion military upgrade and carrying the country past the current global financial crisis.

オーストラリアのラッド政権が、第二次大戦後、最大となる軍備増強を計画している。国防白書で今後２０年間で潜水艦隊を倍増し、新たにＦ３５戦闘機を１００機導入するなど­装備の大幅な刷新と増強の必要性を表明する。白書では、アジアにおける中国の着実な軍備の増強により、アジアの大国間で海軍力の増強競争が起こると分析。その結果、巡航ミ­サイルを搭載した新世代の潜水艦や軍艦、さらに対潜水艦戦や電子戦用の基盤整備が進むだろうとしている。こうした地域情勢に対応してオーストラリアとしても海軍力を中心に­増強をはかり、アジア太平洋地域で空母を含む中国海軍の増強に対抗して、シーレーン（海上交通路）の防衛に努めるのが狙いだ。ラッド首相も昨年末、「シーレーンを守ろうと­するつもりなら、相応の能力が必要だ。わが国は、そのために必要な海軍力を将来持たなければならない」と述べていた。白書では、今後の国防計画について、弾道ミサイル防衛­システムを搭載した７０００トン級の戦艦８隻、さらに１５００トン級の新型の哨戒艇を２０２０年までに導入、対潜哨戒機も旧型のＡＰ３オライオンから、Ｐ８ポセイドンへと­更新、少なくとも８機を導入するとしている。さらに対潜ヘリコプターを２７機以上導入することが検討されている。一方、空軍はＦ１８の後継として、Ｆ３５ステルス戦闘機１­００機を１４年までに調達。また、Ｃ１３０Ｊハーキュリー輸送機６機を増強、Ｃ２７Ｊ輸送機の導入も検討されている。そのほか、陸軍もヘリ部隊の増強や新型の装甲戦闘車の­配備を進める。ただ、ラッド首相はこれまで「親中派」とみられてきただけに、今回の計画に中国が強く反発することも予想される。

Australian Industry will benefit from Building the JSF,Cablex will build ejector seat parts,Marand and BAE Australia will make all Vertical tails(722 units so far) for the JSF(they have already won 1.2 billion worth of work)Thats just the start of Australias involvement.

Experts, Kissinger described Military men as Dumb Animals who fight wars they dont understand.U mentioned Aust Industry benefits name one Aust Comp who will benefit.If we had Aussie Defense Ind like Sweden we wouldn't be sending our Troops to buy protection from US we lost 50000 in WW1 for same reason.2010 Sweden 8 largest exporter of militray equip, Aust 9 largest importer of equip.Have u noticed we r an island easily cut off from suppliers?

@rag5206 Rand Corp's report was proven crap! I saw it a while ago, sorry to say this but actual experts ,know that this is complete crap. I bet you look into people like bloody Carlo Kopp who is hated by those senior members of the RAAF with one air marshal even lashing out and saying his stories are complete crap with fairy tale scenarios. Our airforce (actual experts) unlike yourself have opted for the F-35.

@Kirkzzy Do some research Rand Corp panned it so have several US Generals a large part of F35 fleet is currently grounded.A multi billion aircraft purchase WON"T help our economy only US makers.We have little industrial capacity especially aircraft we will make little bits in foreign owned workshops ie profits go off shore. We made every bit of the Mirage Have look a map we r an island need local defense capacity look what happened in WW2.Sweden should be our model for defense capacity & exports

@rag5206 What you just said is wrong in so many ways. The F-35 when it enters service will the the most advanced aircraft in the world. Australian industry will be helping in making the F-35. ASEAN has nowhere near the experience US has with building fighters. Purchasing the F-35 means that we will have more interoperability with our allies (all of the west is purchasing it) on the battlefield and be able to jump into their logistical train.

@Kirkzzy The F35 purchase is just a replacement of very old F111 aircraft, personally I think we should have gone into a development program with ASEAN to build a joint fighter, It would help country technically and financially the money stays here instead of going to America. The F35 looks like it might have been a bad purchase. Whoever made this video is just making trouble
