Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi performs in Tiruvarur in 1986. Sri Rajiv Gandhi (then Prime Minister of India), Sri S.L.Khurana (then Governor of Tamilnadu) Dr M.G.R (then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu), Sri P.V.Narasimha Rao, (Former Prime Minister and then External Affairs Minister of India) Sri P.Chidambaram (Current Home Minister and then Minister of State for Internal Security - Govt of India), Sri G.K.Moopanar (then General Secretary of the All India Congress Commitee), Thiru Navalar Nedunchezian (then Finance Minister of Tamilnadu) & other Ministers and dignitaries are amongst those in the audience.

Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi is being vocally supported by her daughter Smt Radha Viswanathan, Smt Dwaram Mangathaayaaru on the violin & Sri K.V.Prasad on the mridangam. Smt Gowri Ramnarayan accompanies on the Tambura.
You can see Rajiv enjoying the song and even keeping Tala.

The song(s) performed in this clip are:
Om Namah Pranavaarthaaya (Dhyana Shloka) [Excerpt from the "Dakshinamoorti Slokam" of Adi Shankaracharya]

Devaadi Deva Sadashiva
Raga: Sindhuramakriya
Tala: Adi
Composer: Tyagaraja Swami

Substance of the song:
O Lord Who is the Origin of everything! O Supreme Lord Sadashiva Who has the Sun (Lord of the day), the Moon and Fire as Your (three) Eyes!
O Lord elusive to even Indra - who is Lord to the celestials - and Brahma - the Grand Father! O Lord for Whom tranquility and other virtues are adornments! Beloved of Parvati!
You are verily Lord Bhava, wearing the digit of the Moon; with the blue throat; Who appears as if a billion suns have arisen together! O Lord praised by Vishnu - Consort of Lakshmi - please deign to bestow on me devotion to Thy Holy Feet, Benefactor of the humble; Lord with a smiling Face; the Lord worshipped by Tyagaraja

  • Thanks for posting this. THis is a very rare video.. Is there any other songs from this concert?

  • @ravindrabhatt unfortunately this is the only song from this particular recording

  • Great video. We will always miss MS.

Interesting to see Rajiv Gandhi in the audience, along with MGR. I actually attended the aradhanai at Tiruvaiyaru that year. While Rajiv Gandhi attended with good intentions and announced the opening of a new Cultural Centre, his visit ruined the festivities to some extent because of the excessive security restrictions and the mindless arrogance of the policemen.

  • This is not a Thiruvaiyaaru video. Amma performed a concert in the memory of Indira Gandhi sometime in 1986, this is a clip from that concert. I am not sure exactly where this was performed, but definitely somewhere in Tamil Nadu, as MGR is also present
