The oh-so-popular TNT videos tend to showcase massive explosions rather than controlled ones. In terms of density, this is about 16% as many explosions going off at once as a standard TNT video, and that's only considering the X-Y axis. If they made a cube of solid TNT and set that off, it would be only 3.2%.
As you can clearly see, simply filling a ditch full of explosives isn't nearly as efficient as burying them every few meters and letting the chain reaction do the rest.
