Prior to the lockout in 2004-05 the redline was used for both icing and for the 'two line pass'. If a player passed the puck from inside their blueline to beyond the redline it was a two line pass and the play was whistled down. Now the two line pass is legal and the redline is only used to determine icings. Taking the redline out speeds the game up.

@jebusthefirst - it was one of those things where they figured they need to speed up the game, "Red Line was just one thing that has disappeared over the years they have removed the clutching and grabbing, goalie handling the puck behind the nets in the corners etc... They are thinking they need to slow things down to hopefully reduce concussions

sorry to sound like a n00b people. But can someone explain to me what the deal was in this 'red line removal' or putting it back in? I live in Britain and have only been following hockey since the 08-09 season, thanks in advance :-)
