Judge Thomas Buergenthal is the American judge on the 15-member International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, which has its seat in The Hague, Netherlands. He was elected to the Court in 2000 and reelected in 2005. Judge Buergenthal previously served as the chairman of the El Savador Truth Commission and president of the Inter-American Court for Human Rights. At the time of his election to the Court, Judge Buergenthal was the Lobingier Professor of Comparative Law and Jurisprudence at the George Washington University Law School and presiding director of its International Rule of Law Center. Previously, he had served as dean of the law school at American University. He is the author of several books and numerous articles in scholarly journals. Judge Buergenthal is the honorary president of the American Society of International Law and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of International Law.
