The Presidential election is underway in Azerbaijan, where the incumbent President Ilham Aliyev is up against six other candidates. Some opposition leaders are boycotting the election claiming they've denied an opportunity to compete freely, while the government has promised this election will be the most democratic in Azerbaijans post-Soviet history.

  • @fretfrek it has nothing to do with religion trust me...just bribes and corruption!

  • its all about pipe line

  • Half the country is named either after him or his father, pretty soon they will name the country Aliyevistan. The constitution is not worth the paper it is written on as long as this lot remain in power. Im not surprised though. They are only in power because the people let them remain in power.

  • brutal dictatorship yes, but as for Islamo fascist state, that is a comment you should make after you visit the country. They must not educate retards in your country. I am sorry to hear that. I hope you get some help soon.

  • ya, but people can say the same about russia, i mean sure, life in moscow has drastically improved..but remains that in eastern russia live is still a challenge, and the political elite, through the control of media, and natural resources sales to the west, russian leadership can keep its position. i mean, 2 months before the 1999 election NO ONE in russia knew putin, but on the election, everyone thought he was a hero? how?...if you want PM me, i will have more than 500 characters to write.

  • certainly. i personally don't think that the american system is perfect. i mean, once again it suffers from too much power to the executive and less to the legislative, which makes for slightly imperfect balance. as for bush being the son of another bush,of course there are political elites in the United States, so, sure bush senior has an impact on his son's election, but its not like he can directly legate his position to him. ok..but WHAT reforms need to be continued??

  • and what to dictatorship, I don't know what u mean. May be if u give some examples, what he did (regarding to press or devoloping an independent entreunership), I could understand u. As for me, I can say that the situation in Azerbaijan is much more better than 10 year ago definitely. And I am sure after some 10 years, we will have success in all fields

  • If u r informed, then u must have read about the critics to the limit of prezidency in USA (the principle: I'll do everything what I want within 8 years, 'cause I'm going to leave my position. in example of Bush) As to son of prezident again, for USA it won't be a great suprise, as they have had the same. I would say regardin to referendum, that reforms in Azerbaijan need to be continued. Of course, we need also changes. But we cannot wait the solution of all our problems from prezident
