This is all actually the fault of the game thinking it'd be funny to make me play as Lancelot the rest of the way. Arthur was the only one I liked and was doing even reasonably decent with.
Just so you know though I had already did this before your prediction, I didn't get trigger happy with save states just to prove you wrong.

You probably didn't know this, but with most arcade-style beat em ups you can change characters at each continue.
After the DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE screen when you re-enter the game you could choose a different character. You must have done it accidentally

I figured, but upon the next death as a character I didn't want, I pressed every button trying to change it back and it didn't seem to be working.
