@icemenace1 They were built like that , so the wings would be easier and quicker to replace after battle damage .

schöne bilder , guter ton, saubere kamera

I believe it was because to save weight, since center fuselage structure could bear the weight of the landing gear instead of heavy attachment points in the wings.

Quite easy to say why britains won the BoB... the germans couldn't cover their bombers as the 109-action-radius was very limited due to it's limited fuel-tanks...
I don't tell here that the britains did not have good pilots (they had!!) - but I really hope that people see the fact that they couldn't outrule the 109 at all... and germans didn't have much more 109 than the brits had spitfires/hurricanes either... so it was pretty even... with strong advantages for england.

Germany had a "head start" in the ace department due to the fact they took on lesser opponents before the Brits. quite a few aces made during this period. Not to take away from Hartmann,Rall,Galand,et al........They were all great pilots to last so long.....

Der absolute Hammer!!

The ME109 was pretty evenly matched with the spitfire in that each had about an equal number of strengths and weaknesses. ME109 pilots were generally more experienced, but they had to be since the 109 was more difficult to fly. The only reason that the ME109 didn't rule the day during the battle of Britain is that it could only carry enough fuel for about 15 minutes of fighting time once it got over Britain, so it wasn't as effective at bomber escort as the German command had hoped.

then can you explain why they lost the war?
-
Well, however it was, Germany has lost aging.
-
That's myth. Not particulary a 109 problem, rather an inexperient pilot's problem. Put a driver who just learned how to drive a 50cv car to drive a ferrari. What you expect will happen? ;) Spitfire was very hard to take off, having quite a few accidents, about the same 109 had in landings. The numbers of 109 crashes in landings is often exagerated, basicly to tell that british were better than germans, etc etc etc.
notice how the hydralics bounce the aircraft on the springs on the ground?

i'm sure that this had a lot to do with the structure of these early aircraft as well. since the gear is directly below the planes center of mass (the fuselage), its a much more solid approach. perhaps that what the designers were thinking...gear rooted in the wings themselves may have given them reason to think that the wing frame could not take the stress from landing and snap?!? also, it might have to do with hydraulic lines....

Anybody know why exactly the old german designers put the landing gear close together?
icemenace1 5 years ago
because the spitfire was designed the same way?!?
