This is the second of a four-part gameplay video of Gimmick!, a platform game released by SunSoft for the Japanese NES in 1992. A worldwide release of this game (as "Mr. Gimmick") was planned but ultimately canceled, leaving only the original Japanese version and a small release in Scandinavia. Gimmick! was a major accomplishment and a beautiful game, and it's a shame that the game never had its chance to shine.

Be sure you keep annotations on! I spent a long time explaining the history and cultural significance of this game, I hope you learn something.

  • I have a queston for you. Are there any other games you can think of that put this kind of detail into them? Any other favorites?

  • @marsgreekgod Besides the obvious (EarthBound, most Lucasarts adventure games) my favorite game that has a stupid amount of detail and silly things to do is Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures for Genesis and SNES. If I ever do another annotated video like this one -- and I probably never will -- it will be that game.

  • Thanks for this. It's really fun to watch and appreciate the accomplishments on past hardware.

Btw, Wikipedia says the ay8910 has 3 voices[1] and links to a technical page[2] that says "The PSG contains 3 independent channels, a single noise generator, and a single envelope generator." So it really might only have 3 'full' channels. I wonder what's actually in use.

  • This game looks amazing i want to try it!

  • The song for the weird mechanical boss isn't unique. It's used again in the third he-man looking dude in the last non-secret level. Sorry to be a Douchy McNitpick....This game is incredible, and I am eternally grateful to you for exposing me to it.

  • This game really isn't about the way it looks so much as the way it's designed (though I do love it's aesthetics). I find both the level designs and enemy behavior very fascinating.

  • Awesome video!! This puts Kirby to shame in some aspects! I agree one of the MOST impressive looking games on Nes! I think I gotta emulate this one! Again, GREAT video of an awesome game!!

  • wow I love the music in the boss scene so epic.

  • I think I have beaten this game about 50 times with all the treasures, without any cheats.

  • It's a shame that it was japan and scandinavia only because I would love to have htis series right now just like kirby mario etc.

  • stand in the tunnel and shot the star

  • 7:30 Aren't these guys TOYS?
