I just came back from visiting the memorial in Berlin and I was profoundly moved by the monument. When walking in, one starts out with very low stones and you still feel the sun, and most of all see and hear the other people and the city around you. The deeper you walk in, the taller the stones. All of a sudden, you no longer see or hear the people around you. They are all there, but you feel alone. Every once in a while you catch a glimpse of another person, but one feels profoundly alone.
A statue would take away from the great sadness of the Holocaust. It is not suposed to be a light subject to discuss or something to go to and be admired. It's depressing, cold and has a sense of loss. The way it should be. Those who forget history are bound to repeat it. It started with book burning. Let's not ever do it again or even think about doing it agin. people are people in the end the same as all the rest of us.
