This is our "work in progress" movie screen made from PVC Pipe, black-out cloth, grommets and some nylon twine. Cost so far is well below $50.

Materials list: 5 - 10 foot sections of 1" PVC, 6 t's, 2 elbows, nylon twine, grommets, 3 1/2 yds black-out cloth.

After constructing this, we felt that the center support can probably be eliminated as there isn't enough weight or tension to cause the PVC to sag in the middle.

Eventually we want to paint the screen silver (since our projector likes this surface) and include a black border all around which will hide the pvc frame and also add a skirt to the bottom to hide the legs.

The "feet" on this frame are temporary as you'll see (they aren't the same size). We're thinking about putting casters on it so it can be moved around easily by one person.

  • Hi, I have a big sheet that is tacked to my cieling and it has weights on the bottom of it to help hold it down and reduce movement of the screen. It is white, but I wonder if I can spray it with silver spray paint and if that would improve the picture. If you think it would work tell me what kind of paint (glosy, semi glosy, flat). That would be cool as I can get bottles of silver paint for 98 cents!

    Thank you!

  • If you visit the link in the video description (see the upper right side of this page where it has my profile picture and the subscribe button). See where it says "more info"? Click on that. Visit the link at the top. the video on that page is the the main video about the screen we painted and what we used.

  • You guys did such a great job on this! I've started drawing plans for the same type of screen. Love the lacing and grommets idea! I plan on using a spray gun similar to what you'd use in painting a car for the silver. The legs and basic frame could easily be covered using some black curtain giving a true movie screen look.

Great Stuff. Thanks for posting this!!

  • Hey glad I could be of some help to someone! :) Turned out that it didn't need the center support as the lacing doesn't need to be very tight.

  • Niceeeeee and professional looking!!!!!!

  • It took 2 ppl to put it together. My hubby sawed the pieces and I had to help him when it came time for the glue. The glue dries *really fast* and you have to have the pieces put in so that it's not all skewed...so you have to work really fast. He glued it, shoved it in and I stood on it (while it was flat on the floor). I hope that makes sense.

  • I got that screen review for you, posted...look for it! Don't make my mistake and use a brush. Paint the fabric BEFORE you put it on the frame and use a SPONGE ROLLER if you don't spray it on. I'm planning on either repainting it OR just starting over and use a sponge roller to begin with like I should have. :/

  • Well, with the torpedo projector, which is what I built this screen for, it works best with a silver surface. I finally got to painting it silver last weekend. I don't know about other projectors...different projectors like different surfaces.

  • looking forward to the screen review.

i have a half of a can of valspar ultra white paint will this produce a good picture on a sheet of thin wood?

i will be buying some blackout cloth for my windows as well.

    keep us posted.

  • I don't know since I don't have anything to make the comparison. The blackout cloth was what we could afford. I just painted it silver this weekend and hope to get another review with the screen painted.
