Demonstrating of Valve Lapping on cylinder head (1.8L 4-cylinder head for MGB) with Air (pneumatic) drill. Could not get good suction with Hand-Lap Tool as some valves had small pits (no problem).
Upon inspection (after lapping), had a solid 1/8-inch concentric landing area.
A broad landing area (contact surface) is good for heat flow from valve to block, to prevent "burnt valves". In the long run, valves with broad landing areas will last longer and seat better.

  • not sure if this is good for the valve guides ....a high twisting rpm might create wear..nice job on the video though

  • @PGXI The head is still working fine....2 years later.

You make an insightful point, it's worth comtemplating (obviously someone could do the math and physics on it).

  • how do you check the valve and valve seat with the permanent marker?after lapping the valves i use compressed air and petrol to check for leackage

  • @petros172 actually not "permanent marker", but rather a dye (perma-blue).....but your method sounds good, I'll have to try next time. Mahalo for watching.

  • song reminds me of title screen music of a old game i played GTA 2

  • @antonyr123 "High Roller" by Crystal Method.... cool

  • Thanks for the video. Great. Just wondering though how you are going to be finger printed now after holding those valves in? ;)

  • @EntomologyPurdue LOL.....yes...but, I do consider Newton's Laws and such!

  • You could not pay me to hang a drill off a valve stem like that.... At least not on my own engine.

  • Music was so cool i watched it twice---I'm a little out of my comfort zone when it comes to rebuiling heads but with "High Roller" rockin in the background I just might pull this off... Oh and thank you for sharing this video--i really appreciate it!

  • @mickeygovender pore meth in a cylinder and let it set and I promise it will etch the cylinder wall...not a good thing

  • Sounds like Robocop lol
