A beautiful video. Pefect choice of song and performers.
Dog of Flanders is like Grave of the Fireflies. It's something that everyone should watch, but it's hard to see it a second time because it's so sad.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes both movies have exhibit an immense amount of pathos. I thought "Grave of the Fireflies" was a whole lot more gruesome and full of terror than "A Dog of Flanders." However, "A Dog of Flanders" still drew out more tears from me than did "Grave of the Fireflies." I wonder why that is.

I think that Flanders is more of a tragedy because Nello had more to lose. He had friends and love in his life, and there was hope at the end, which was never realized. Nello would have had a new adopted home and future as an artist but for a few minutes of bad timing.
Seto and Setsuko's life seemed doomed from the beginning, with nothing but hardship and on one but each other. Indeed, the film begins with their ghosts. I think that the loss of the hopeful future is what makes Flanders sadder.

That's true. I never thought about that. Maybe it's also because of the fact that Nello seems to remain content despite the consecutive tragedies in his life. Even at the very end of his tragic life he says "Dear Virgin Mary, now that I've seen Rubins I have nothing more to ask for." It makes me think that Nello, who never once complained or whined about his life, is the least deserving person of the continuous disappointments in his life.
