1) [starts with no sound, silent pictures of Truman, staff, then sound when Truman gives speech] "Early in the A.M. President Harry S. Truman leaves Blair House, his new temporary home, and briskly walks to the White House. Mathew J. Connelly, his confidential secretary, and Leonard Reinsch, his press and radio relations man, are busy at their tasks. The President nominates John W. Snyder, St. Louis banker, to become Federal Loan Administrator. Mr. Truman confers with the U.S. delegates to the forthcoming Golden Gate conference, then later, in the presence of Congressional leaders, he signs a bill extending Lend Lease. 348 members of the press, a record number, crowd into his office to attend his first press conference. In the evening, the President goes on the air, to talk to U.S. service men all over the world. He explains he is an ex-serviceman, and that he is carrying on, as the entire country expects them to do."
2) Archbishop Spellman opens drive for Catholic Charities. (partial newsreel)

  • history is amazing

  • as far as the decision was concerned at that time, I have to say Truman was very wise despite of the popularity. Because everyone thinks the one way does not hold the truth in big picture. You just have an extreme opinion against this guy without any sense of reality. That makes you a negligent moron.

  • @nicki452 Does typing in capital letters make you feel powerful? The A-Bomb was an unfortunate measure to end a brutal war, but the Axis powers killed ten fold as many innocent lives then the Allies did.

  • Harry Truman wasn't a human - he's anti, anti-man!

He's lis'nin' 2 the "slotsiP xeS" (while dancin' crazy pogo dance!...) xDD

  • i WANT THIS THIS PERVERS MASS MURDER BURNING ON A HILL OF WOOD! BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY PUNISHMENT WHICH WOULD BE NEARLY ADEQUATE FOR SUCH A PERVERS PIECE OF SHIT! THEN THE USA IS SO ARROGANT TO TELL US THAT WE SHOULD SHAVE FOR THE NEXT HUNDERED GENERATIONS FOR HOLOCAUST? I SHIT ON HOLOCAUST IF USA IS ALLOWED TO BE PROUD OF MURDERING 2 JAPANESE CITIES! HOPE USA BECOME A LOT 11 SEPTEMBER BECAUSE IT DESERVE TERROR! THE 11 SEP IS A JUSTICE DAY TO CELEBRATE A DAY WHICH MAKE WORLD MORE FAIR

  • He didn't, because he was hugely at fault for not addressing the problem. If you want to carry out your "ball drop" metaphor, Bush just watched the ball as it bounced nearby, and then he turned his back to it.

  • You and I agree on the role of Federal government as many would agree with us but the fact is there is people out there who would disagree. This is a debate that can be traced back to the abortion issue, the civil rights movement, prohibition, the slavery issue and even to the times of Washington and Jefferson. Our founding fathers argued bitterly amongst one another over the role of State vs. Federal government. Maybe it is the never ending argument of American government? States Rights for me

  • You're right about Bush's oratory skills & the media bias against him! You also understand the Constitution better than many, The Federal government has to be asked by the states to paly a role in these situations. The governor of LA didn't make that request until it was too late. I think that fact was overlooked due to the emotional impact of the tragedy & people were looking to blame someone. Bush definitely took it on the chin!

  • In the history books rarely are leaders judged by their public opinion in their own times.

  • Maybe part of being a good leader is taking it on the chin rather you deserve it or not at times? The more he argued the more he would have been attacked by the media and let's face it Bush was not a good speach maker and had the numbers against him there. In a case like that the federal government should be the supporting cast behind local and state government, not the lead charicter. But thats just my opinion and probably most of the founding father's as well.

  • I agree! Bush was unfairly blamed for Katrina. The mayor of New Orleans & the governor of LA are the ones that dropped the ball! Bush should've asserted that point much more forcefully than he did!

  • You are speaking of the age old American argument which is "What is the role of Federal Government in America". That has been the basis of nearly every major American political argument from the time of Washington to Obama and beyond. Of course Katrina will always be Bush's biggest blimish in history I believe. But the question is should it be? Personally I believe in State's Rights above Federal Intrusion and think Negan & the gov. of Louisiana deserve the lion's share of the blame.
