Sam and Jess are protraying the 'popular girls' who always make fun of her, therefore for they are whispering nasty things about her and staying away from the 'freak'. Nellie feels strange, thus the song 'Strange'. Get it now...?
In simpler words, Nellie is an outcast who gets made fun of and she feels strange. :)
