On February 9, 2011, amidst a huge crowd, the U of T Mississauga Choir performed Baba Yetu as a surprise for Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion's 90th birthday. The song is from composer Christopher Tin's classical/world fusion album 'Calling All Dawns', which has been nominated for two Grammys. The lyrics are in Swahili, one of the official languages of Tanzania, where "Hazel's Hope"--an initiative through World Vision Canada--helps children affected by HIV/AIDS. • The unique part of this performance is that although everyone in the choir is from different cultural backgrounds, no one actually knew how to speak Swahili! They had to learn it all from scratch, and they did a fantastic job. Congratulations UTM Choir, great performance! Way to put UTM on the music scene!

  • News update: Christopher Tin, the composer who arranged this version of Baba Yetu, has won the Grammy for "Baba Yetu" sung by the Soweto Gospel choir moments ago! Congratulations, Christopher!
