The acoustic version of "The Trapeze Swinger", by Iron & Wine, as it appears on the second track of his 2006 Sub Pop EP "Such Great Heights".

Remember that 480p means higher audio quality, including left-right (stereo) tracks.

Lyrics:
Please, remember me,
Happily
By the rose bush laughing with
Bruises on my chin
The time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house
Beneath the hill
And up until
Someone caught us in the kitchen with
Maps, a mountain range,
A piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention

And,
Please, remember me,
Fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then
They went on to say
That the pearly gates
Have such eloquent graffiti
Like, "We'll meet again,"
And, "Fuck the man,"
And, "Tell my mother not to worry,"
And, "Angels with their great
Handshakes,"
But always done in such a hurry

And,
Please, remember me,
At Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight
We'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came
I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world
And then returned
And now you're lit up by the city

And,
Please, remember me,
Mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower
Call,
Then pass us by
But much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate
Just like the gates
Around the Holy Kingdom
With words like, "Lost and found," and, "Don't look down..."
And, "Someone Save Temptation."

And,
Please, remember me,
As in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees
Fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies
That call you what you like
And even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see
A trapeze
Swinger
High as any savior

And,
Please, remember me,
My misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain
And chasing trains
The colored birds above there running
In circles 'round the well
To where it spills
On the wall behind St. Peter's
So bright on cinder gray
In spray paint,
"Who the hell can see forever?"

And,
Please, remember me,
Seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hands between your knees
You turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful,
But never meant to last."
The clowns that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs
The parking lot
It had an element of danger

And,
Please, remember me,
Finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear,
And if I make...
The pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer,
A boy and girl,
An angel kissing on a sinner,
A monkey and a man,
A marching band,
All around a frightened trapeze swinger...

  • I love this version so much, makes me tear up a bit every time I listen to it. I had it once, a while ago... but lost it somehow...

  • @saiyukimaru It is an incredibly powerful song; this acoustic version has a much more personal feeling to it - I love the variations he puts on his tone as it goes on and the abandonment at the end. It will always resonate with me because, for several months, I wasn't aware of the original. Though I think I like both versions equally now.

Either way, if you want the mp3 again, I can upload it for download. Message me for the link.

  • @Canibalcole , I've actually been looking around to purchase this MP3. I noticed ti wasn't on Amazon or on iTunes, would you mind telling me where you got it?

    Thanks so much!

  • @thesecretch0rd Odd-- I know this whole EP was originally on iTunes. (Such Great Heights, acoustic Trapeze Swinger, radio session Naked as We Came.) They must've removed it.

I'm all the more glad I have a high-quality copy of it, now, then. I'll send you the link.

  • Did the kid who posted this really kill himself? If so that's a shame. No matter what happens things will get better, you always have another way. But I wish to all who knew you that all will be well, just have hope.

  • You're in a better place, Cole. Rest in peace.

  • I made a pact with myself today. Every morning, I will wake up to this song so I will never forget you. I will remember you, in every way, shape, or form. I just hope you're happy, wherever you are. Thanks for all the memories. It was one hell of a ride.

  • I will remember you fondly, cole. Until next time, old timer.

  • I never knew you well, and I regret that a great deal. We would've gotten along, I can tell by the music you like..RIP you had a beautiful soul

  • Rest in peace, Cole. I wish you didn't take your life. It would have gotten better.

  • Never knew you that well, or at all, but it's always sad when something like this happens... rest in peace CanibalCole.
